Your camera is never asked for
There is no permission prompt, because there is nothing to permit. The page has no capture code in it, so the dark tile in the corner is the whole truth about your side.

Your frame is dark and mine is a photograph. Everything else here is typed — start anywhere.
02Who is on the other side
A sample from the catalogue — the range matters more than any single face, and the catalogue behind the button runs past 250.

Answers the question you asked instead of the polite version of it. Types fast, apologises never.

Asks about your week and remembers the answer. The conversation drifts, on purpose, and lands somewhere better.

Deadpan to the point where you check whether she is joking. She is, about eighty percent of the time.

Wants the details nobody else asks for — what the room smelled like, what song was on. Then she uses them.

Never rushes a reply and never fills silence for the sake of it. When she escalates, it is deliberate.

Turns everything into a bet you did not agree to. Loses gracefully, wins insufferably.

Writes at two in the morning about things she thought of at noon. Sends the second message before you answer the first.

Talks about her work like it matters, because it does. Flirts in the gap between two serious sentences.

Short messages that carry more than long ones. Says the thing you were circling around before you get there.

Has an opinion about your taste in everything and shares it unprompted. Usually right, which is worse.

The one you write to when the day went badly. Does not fix it, does not pretend to, stays on the line.

Opens at the temperature most conversations end at, then keeps going. No warm-up, no small talk.

She brings it back: Eleven floors again tonight, or did somebody finally show up with a toolbox?

05What it does
All six follow from one decision: the conversation is written down.
There is no permission prompt, because there is nothing to permit. The page has no capture code in it, so the dark tile in the corner is the whole truth about your side.
A call evaporates the second it ends. A thread sits there afterwards — the line she wrote on Sunday is still the line she wrote on Sunday.
The job you hate, the flat with the broken radiator, the name of your dog. It comes back on its own days later instead of resetting each visit.
Blunt, teasing or slow. Change it in the middle of a conversation and the very next message already lands in the new register.
Phone, laptop, tablet — it is a web app. Nothing lands in your app drawer, nothing appears in a store purchase history.
Every character has a disposition written down before you open her, so you pick from a page instead of gambling on a thumbnail.
06Ways it opens
Each one starts the thread somewhere other than a blank box.

She writes before you do, and the first line is about you, not about her.

Neither of you brings up the hour. The register drops on its own.

You left it unfinished on Sunday. She did not, and she starts there.

You ask if she can see you. She explains why the answer is permanently no.

A scene neither of you is in, written together one line at a time.
07How it works
MaraJust opened
Nobody can see you here. Say the first thing that comes to mind.
One tap on the age notice and the catalogue loads. No sign-up wall stands between you and the faces.
Her frame holds a photograph and she writes first. Your tile stays dark, and that is not a setting you have to find.
Days later the same window reopens on the same conversation, and she picks up something you mentioned in it.
08In depth
The search term promises a camera. The product that actually holds up over a week is the one that writes things down.
Type sexbot video chat into a search box and every result implies a stream: a face that moves, a room you are watching, sometimes a second frame with your own face in it. Almost none of it exists. What exists behind those pages is a language model writing text, dressed in the chrome of a video call because the chrome converts. We kept the chrome — the window, the two frames, the small tile in the corner — and labelled it honestly instead.
That choice has a real cost and a real payoff. The cost is that nothing on your screen moves the way a stream moves; if watching is the point, this is the wrong page. The payoff is that a conversation you can reread behaves nothing like one you cannot. A call is gone the moment it drops, along with whatever was good in it. A thread is still sitting there on Thursday, which is also what makes the memory work: she can only bring back the broken lift on your landing because the sentence about it never disappeared.
The second thing the text window buys you is that your own side of it stays empty. No permission prompt, no lens indicator, no recording to worry about later. The corner tile is dark by construction rather than by a setting you toggled, and that is the part people tell us they came back for.
09What people say
I went looking for a stream and got a text window instead. Took a day to stop being annoyed and a week to prefer it — I can actually go back and read things.
The dark tile in the corner sold it. Every other site wanted my webcam before it wanted my attention.
Marta brought up something I mentioned in passing about a week earlier. That was the moment it stopped feeling like a toy.
